Disk failures don’t just happen to others — and they always happen at the worst time. The solution is three numbers: 3-2-1.
The rule
- 3 copies of your data (the original + two backups).
- 2 different media (external drive, NAS, cloud…).
- 1 copy outside your home (cloud or drive at the office).
In practice
On Mac, Time Machine + a cloud will do. On PC, File History + a cloud. The key: it must be automatic — a manual backup is a forgotten backup.
The 3-2-1 rule means you keep three copies of your data, stored on two different types of devices, with one copy kept far away. This way, if one backup fails, you still have others to rely on.

Imagine you have 500 GB of photos on your laptop. You keep the original files, back them up to an external hard drive, and upload a copy to a cloud service. If your laptop crashes, you can restore everything from the cloud or the external drive.
