Losing your photos or documents is the most avoidable disaster. Cloud backup automates your peace of mind.

Public cloud
Simple and synchronized, iCloud, Google Drive, and OneDrive are perfect for everyday use. Beware of free space that fills up quickly.
Backup vs synchronization
Warning: sync is not a backup. If you delete a file, it disappears everywhere. A real backup keeps versions.
The 3-2-1 rule
Standard practice: 3 copies, on 2 media, with 1 off-site. This is the standard — we explain it here.

A backup keeps multiple copies of your files, so if you delete or corrupt one, you can restore an earlier version. Sync just keeps everything the same everywhere, which isn’t safe if you make a mistake.
If you accidentally delete a work document from your computer, sync tools like Google Drive will also delete it from the cloud. A backup service, however, would still have the previous version, letting you restore it easily.
